Most people think that sharks are vicious creatures and will attack anything that crosses their way. This is mainly because of those sensational Hollywood movies like Jaws, or more recently, Armageddon.
But it is important to separate fact from fiction and to understand the reality about sharks.
First of all, you must know that shark attacks on humans are extremely rare. According to the International Shark attack file, there was only 64 attacks worldwide in 2019, and only 2 was fatales. Considering that there are millions and millions of people going in the sea every year. The chance of being attack is incredibly low.
Sharks are not indiscriminate killers. They are apex predators and have an important role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems.
They feed on fish, seal, and others marine mammals, BUT NOT HUMAIN. We are NOT on their food list. You may ask yourself, why is their shark attack if we are not on their food list? Most attacks are with swimmer or surfer. With them agitating the water, the shark misreads sense and mistakes you for a seal. They take ONE bite, and when they see it's a humain, they go away. If we were on their food list, they would eat us. We never hear about someone getting eaten by a shark. If you think about it, shark attack are usually one bite. They think you are a seal, they take one bite, realize that you are not, and go away. The problem is that shark are very strong, so aldo they only take one bite, it can cause a lot of dommage, even fatality.
Also, you should know that not all species of shark are dangerous. They're over 500 species of shark, and only few could be a threat to humain. Great white shark, Tiger shark and Bull shark are often associate to a attack on humain.
That said, there's thousands of divers, diving with those sharks and experiencing a great moment. I have seen Bull sharks during my dives more than 100 times and never felt threatened by them. The ocean is their home, if you respect that, and are a caution diver, you can have amazing dive with sharks. The majority of shark species are harmless to humain. Many species are even docile or shy.
Conservation efforts are crucial in protecting sharks and breaking the myth that they are dangerous. Sharks are facing numerous threats: overfishing, habitat destruction and the SHARK FIN TRADE.
This, I can not understand. They fish sharks, cut their fins and throw them back in the water. Of course, with no fins, the shark can not swim and die. All that, just to make soup. This is over me. And then WE think that sharks are dangerous! We are way more dangerous to them then they are to us. The decline of sharks can have a catastrophic effect on the entire marine ecosystem (and part of it is for soup).
By understanding the reality of sharks and promoting their conservation, we can help ensure the survival of our wonderful Oceans and marine life.
